WASHINGTON D.C. - Facebook announced today a major upgrade to the privacy controls available to its users. Berin Szoka, Senior Fellow at The Progress & Freedom Foundation, had the following comments:
Three cheers for Facebook for setting a new standard in personalized privacy control and for asking users to choose for themselves! Because Internet users vary widely in their privacy sensitivities, the best approach is to empower users to make their own choices about sharing their personal information online. The hard part is to design interfaces that give users powerful control and transparency while still being easy to use. Facebook has hit the right balance. Privacy advocates should look forward to ongoing innovation from Facebook and its competitors.
