Cyber-Safety in a Web 2.0 World
Rep. Bean, Sponsor of the “SAFER NET Act,” to Speak at October 3rd Event

WASHINGTON D.C. - What tools are available to parents who are concerned about protecting their children from exposure to unwanted content and unwanted contact on the Internet? What is the role of policymakers in promoting the safety of children online? These and other questions will be discussed Wednesday, October 3rd by panelists at "Cyber-Safety in a Web 2.0 World: What Parents and Policymakers Need to Know," an event host by The Progress & Freedom Foundation. Representative Melissa Bean (D-IL 8th), is scheduled to speak at the event.

Representative Melissa Bean, sponsor of the "Safeguarding America's Families by Enhancing and Reorganizing New and Efficient Technologies Act" (H.R. 3461), will address attendees prior to the panel discussion. Representative Bean's bill proposes a nationwide awareness campaign to educate parents, children and consumers on Internet safety. A panel of leading child safety experts, all authors of online safety guides for parents, will discuss existing child safety tools and best practices. The panelists will also debate the role of policymakers in promoting online safety.

Adam Thierer, moderator of the event, has written extensively on the issues of online child safety regulatory policy. He is the author of a new special report, "Parental Controls and Online Child Protection: A Survey of Tools & Methods." The report provides a comprehensive listing of parental control tools, rating schemes, education efforts, and initiatives aimed at promoting online child safety. The book is available on the PFF website.

"Cyber-Safety in a Web 2.0 World: What Parents and Policymakers Need to Know" will be held from noon to 1:30 pm on Wednesday, October 3rd in Room 121 in the Cannon House Office Building. Lunch will be served. Those wishing to attend can register online. General questions can be addressed to Jeff Ho at 202-289-8928 or jho@pff.org.
