Level 3 Communications CEO Speaks Oct. 13
James Crowe and Analysts Discuss Comm. Policy, Sector’s Future

WASHINGTON D.C. - James Q. Crowe, the CEO of Level 3 Communications, Inc., is the next featured speaker in The Progress & Freedom Foundation's "Innovation Agenda 2004" CEO Lunch series. Crowe and a soon-to-be-announced panel of analysts and experts will discuss communications policy and the future of the sector on October 13, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at Washington's Mandarin Oriental hotel at 1330 Maryland Avenue, SW.

Level 3 is an international communications and information services company headquartered in Bloomfield, Colorado. The company operates one of the largest communications and Internet backbones in the world. It is one of the largest providers of wholesale dial-up service to Internet service providers in North America and the primary provider of Internet connectivity to millions of broadband subscribers through its cable and DSL partners. The company offers a range of services over its 23,000-mile broadband fiber optic network, including Internet Protocol services, broadband transport and infrastructure services, collocation services, and patented softswitch managed modem and voice services. Users of Level 3 services include nine out of ten of the world's largest telecommunications carriers and five out of six of the top U.S. ISPs, the company says.

Crowe assumed leadership of Level 3's predecessor in 1997, turning it into a single company focused on communications and information services. Previously, he served as chairman of WorldCom, following that company's merger with MFS Communications Company in 1996. Crowe had been chairman and CEO of MFS, which he founded and took public in 1993.

"James Crowe leads one of the most dynamic competitors in the industry, and is one of a small number of executives who is shaping the future of the communications and Internet sectors," says Progress & Freedom Foundation President Raymond L. Gifford. "We do our level best to provide top-notch speakers whose experience and insights may be valuable to policymakers and experts. James Crowe is an excellent addition to our Innovation Agenda 2004 lunch series."

Those interested in attending the CEO Lunch should register online. Questions should be directed to Eileen Goulding at 202-289-8928 or egoulding@pff.org.
