Popular Guide to Digital Revolution in Sixth Edition
ASPEN, Colorado - The Digital Economy Fact Book, a 'must-have' resource for objective information on the progress of the digital revolution, will soon be available in its sixth edition. Sorting out myths from realities and hyperbolic hopes from sober projections, this annual publication by The Progress & Freedom Foundation presents the best available information on Internet growth, the hardware, content and communications sectors, e-commerce, financing of the digital sector and the entire digital economy. It covers activity through 2003 and 2004.
"The Digital Economy Fact Book is the metronome for the digital revolution," writes Progress & Freedom Foundation President Raymond L. Gifford in the foreword of the book co-written by the Foundation's William F. Adkinson, Jr., Thomas M. Lenard and Michael J. Pickford. "This Sixth Edition of the Fact Book follows the arc of the digital economy through 2003 and 2004 [during which] the IPO returned, venture capital perked up and the communications regulatory regime continued on its tortuous path."
Just as it sought in previous editions to avoid the excessive dot.com hype of the boom years, the Fact Book aims to transcend the doom and gloom of recent years, choosing instead a fact-based approach. Initial copies were distributed to Aspen Summit attendees this week. It will be available to the public soon.
"Austrian Economist Joseph Schumpeter is the patron saint of the digital age, or at least its most prescient commentator (which is not bad for someone writing over a half-century ago), Gifford writes. "Schumpeter described capitalism as a process of 'creative destruction,' where reaching for the next product and the next market spurred innovation and dynamism. The Fact Book documents this Schumpeterian vision and reality."
The Fact Book is available through the PFF web site here.
